Bobbie Ann Mason is a prolific writer, with over seventy-five works to her credit. Her fiction has been compared to that of Flannery O'Connor, Ralph Ellison, and Walker Percy. She moved to New York City where she worked as a reporter for the National Observer, the Journal of American History, and the New York Post. She then turned to fiction and published two novels that garnered significant national attention: The Magic of Reality (1988) which was nominated for the National Book Award, and The Dreamers (2001), named one of "The Best 100 Books of the Century" by the New York Times Magazine.
